Ambiguous chance constrained problems and robust optimization

چکیده
In this paper we study ambiguous chance constrained problems where the distributions of the random parameters in the problem are themselves uncertain. We focus primarily on the special case where the uncertainty set Q of the distributions is of the form Q = {Q : ρp(Q, Q0) ≤ β}, where ρp denotes the Prohorov metric. The ambiguous chance constrained problem is approximated by a robust sampled problem where each constraint is a robust constraint centered at a sample drawn according to the central measure Q0. The main contribution of this paper is to show that the robust sampled problem is a good approximation for the ambiguous chance constrained problem with a high probability. This result is established using the Strassen-Dudley Representation Theorem that states that when the distributions of two random variables are close in the Prohorov metric one can construct a coupling of the random variables such that the samples are close with a high probability. We also show that the robust sampled problem can be solved efficiently both in theory and in practice.

متن کاملAmbiguous Chance Constrained Programs: Algorithms and Applications
Ambiguous Chance Constrained Programs: Algorithms and Applications Emre Erdoğan Chance constrained problems are optimization problems where one or more constraints ensure that the probability of one or more events occurring is less than a prescribed threshold. Although it is typically assumed that the distribution defining the chance constraints are known perfectly; in practice this assumption ...
متن کاملKullback-Leibler Divergence Constrained Distributionally Robust Optimization
In this paper we study distributionally robust optimization (DRO) problems where the ambiguity set of the probability distribution is defined by the Kullback-Leibler (KL) divergence. We consider DRO problems where the ambiguity is in the objective function, which takes a form of an expectation, and show that the resulted minimax DRO problems can be formulated as a one-layer convex minimization ...
متن کاملData-driven chance constrained stochastic program
Chance constrained programming is an effective and convenient approach to control riskin decision making under uncertainty. However, due to unknown probability distributions ofrandom parameters, the solution obtained from a chance constrained optimization problem canbe biased. In addition, instead of knowing the true distributions of random parameters, inpractice, only a series ...
متن کاملOn distributionally robust joint chance-constrained problems
Introduction: A chance constrained optimization problem involves constraints with stochastic data that are required to be satisfied with a pre-specified probability. When the underlying distribution of the stochastic data is not known precisely, an often used model is to require the chance constraints to hold for all distributions in a given family. Such a problem is known as a distributionally...
